Just back from Galtur. Nice resort, although somewhat small. No lift queues. Galtur is a 2 min bus ride from the slopes which are actually in Wirl. Buses run every 10 mins and were not that busy. Couple of really nice black runs that were seriously fast, though not really that steep. Several good reds also. Lifts are generally good apart from the very old 2 man at the far end of the resort. It's long and very slow with no bubble, so very cold in the wind and snow. We had 2 days of very heavy snow which made skiing a challenge, but did not spoil the days too much. Apre is very quiet, with not a lot at the bottom of the runs in Wirl, but several good huts on the slopes.
On the really good side is that Ischgl is only a 10 min bus ride away and again the buses run every 10 mins. Ischgl is a world class resort with a never ending selection of pistes to suit all tastes. I doubt you could ski the whole area in a week. Only thing is, the pistes are commonly affected by the weather, so if it's windy quite a few may be closed. 3 good gondolas to get you up there, with a 4th in the building (should be operating for 2014/2015). Great resort with a lively and plentiful apre scene.
Tips for anybody staying in Galtur but wanting to ski Ischgl. Have a lie in and aim to get the bus at about 10am to Ischgl. Then get off the bus at the second Gondola stop. That way you will get a seat on the bus and there will be no queues at the gondolas. We did try to go earlier one morning (at about 9am), but the bus was packed and the gondola queues were horrendous. So much so, that leaving Galtur at 10am meant we were only about 10 mins later getting to the top of the gondolas.
Coming back the buses again run every 10 mins, so no problems.
Would I go back? You bet I would. It would be nice to stay in Ischgl, but it's much cheaper to stay in Galtur.
Just for info, prices for large beer are about 4-5 euros, coffee or hot chocolate about 3.50 euros, gluewien about 4 euros.
Give it a try, you will love it!
Skied: On snow, On water, On mud, On slush, On ice. Oh, and on a few dry slopes.
