Hi, I have skied before but taking my 13 year old son with me who has never skied before. Checked out Tripadvisor for hotels etc, good reviews for Hotel Hannes but i'm booking blind as I have no idea what Niederau is like. Is it risky for snow over New Year? Can anyone give me some ideas as I dont want to book a disaster :(

Zell am See can be a good option because you also have the glacier at Kaprun on the same lift pass. Its also on the skibus service so transport is not an issue. Of course, if conditions in Zell are not great, you might find that Kaprun is very busy :x
Zell am See is also a nice town and the whole area provides a good selection of skiing in the right conditions. Be aware, though, that the valley runs are quite demanding and can be icy if busy. If you are not a very confident skier, think about coming down in the gondola :wink:

We have been to Niederau many many times now and stayed in the Hannes, Austria and Sonnscheim. For value its about the best. Its clean and comfortable. Never been as early as New Year but have always managed to ski even in the years when snowfall has been bad. We use it as a base now for the skiwelt which is a 15 min taxi drive away. We always book last minute when the price is a lot lower and we know there is decent enough snow levels.

Forgot to say the ski schools are excellent and we have used both red and blue schools for the many friends and family we have taken there over the years.

Ahh thanks for that. Makes me feel a bit better. I know New Year is early and it will be a risk but i'm going to go for it. Hate this time of year, once Christmas is over it is horrible and flat...will be great to have a trip to look forward to :)

Unfortunately the worst snow conditions in the alps are in the central and eastern Austrian areas, with lots of bare meadows in low resorts like Niederau, but more snow is forecast and you will find better skiing higher up if you are going now.
Might be best to have transport and ski other areas in the region as mentioned above.

Thanks Tony, I haven't committed to anything yet but have been looking at Zell am See instead. Seems to have great snow reports for this time of year. Its a bit of a minefield when you don't know the area.

Problem is........of course everyone is heading for the higher resorts. HochZiller was pretty much rammed today. Wasn't tooooo bad in the lift queues (3-4 minutes maybe) but the carparking was pretty unreal.
