My 17 year old daughter and myself wish to have a 4 day ski break from Dec 14 before heading back to Australia. Where would you reommend for early snow, in France close to Lyon airport as that seems to be best transit point from Bordeaux. Otherwise Geneva. We have skiied Val d'Isere so somewhere different.

Chatel isn't too far if you have a car. Good luck anyway and happy skiing :)

Hi Ruth,

Welcome to J2Ski...

[Edited to remove daft suggestion, as our map had Orcieres in the wrong place...]

If you're happy to drive a bit further then there's a reasonable choice from Lyon - you can see the ski areas near Lyon here.

Switching to Geneva might give you more options but check the French Ski opening dates carefully. Much of the Grand Massif, Portes du Soleil and Aravis - not to mention the Chamonix Valley - should be open, although some of the smaller stations might only be open for the weekend, depending on the snow, etc.

Good time to go though; quiet slopes, lots of accommodation choice and (fingers crossed) should have good snow... 8)

If you can go drive a couple of hours Alpe d'Huez is at 1800mts and goes up to over 3000mts. I have skied there in early December twice and it was excellent, very quiet slopes.
When in doubt?....Flat out.

Welcome to J2Ski... take a look at Orcières-Merlette, not much over an hour from Lyon; ...

Blimey, Mr A., my autoroute app tells me it's 2h 50 mins and 220 km ... Could there be two Orcieres-Merlettes maybe ?

.... of course I realise that my own suggestion of Chatel was about the same distance, (if not a bit more) :)

I did Serre Che flying into Lyon in March, the drive across the Col can be hairy, so alternatively look at Les2Alpes and Alpe d'Huez both high and good skiing areas but Lyon side of the Col.

Oh. It appears we had it in the wrong place... or it moved...

Talk amongst yourselves whilst, by the magic that is jiggeryhackery, we make it go back where it should be... apologies for any confusion and thanks for pointing that up Billip1!
