Just busy booking up for Christmas week in Kaprun Austria. The Glacier looks good but can anyone give any past experiences at that time of year? Have been to Ober and Hoch the past couple of years but was told Kaprun was a good choice.

I haven't been at Christmas but it is a good area and the snow on the glacier should be absolutely fine. It is really one big bowl so depending on your skill level you might begin to tire of it after a couple of days. There are a few off-piste routes that are definitely challenging if you are up for it.

Given the height, it could be bitterly cold depending on weather conditions. I stayed outside the village so can't help with that.

Zell am See is also on the pass and is a short bus ride away. Its a lovely area but a lot lower and snow conditions at Christmas could be iffy. I would expect the town to be very nice at Christmas - I was there once for New Years and it was fantastic.

Sounds good!!
We are fairly competent so hopefully will be able to make the most of all areas. Noted about the cold, will take a few extra layers.
Now all we need is a large dump of snow.
Thanks very much for your comments

I live in Piesendorf (4kms) from Kaprun. Currently the glacier is open with reasonable snow but much more is expected this next 7days. Every year a greta many International Ski teams base themselves in Kaprun as the snow conditions are pretty much Guaranteed. For the psat 3 years the Scmittenhöhe in Zell has been open at the latest around the 15th Decemeber and in some cases the middle of November (not this year I fear) Current projected opening of the Schmitten is end of Nov. The Glacier in Kaprun is cold but the ski conditions are usually very good. Another "Tip" if you come and the general snow conditions are good at lower levels, Buy the SKI ALPIN pass which then for around €40 extra gives you access to Saalbach- Hinterglem. (30 mins away) Hope that this helps. Tim

Hi Tim
Thanks very much for the response.
Really looking forward to visiting Kaprun now. It's getting some great reviews and fingers crossed the snow comes in time to give all the local resorts some open runs.
Feel free to keep us posted
Thanks again
Phill

Hi Phill,

We went to Zell am See the week before Christmas in 2012. We had a great time and it snowed pretty much every day. As has already been said the Glacier at Kaprun is great skiing but can be cold!!! Most of the runs were open in Zell apart from a couple into the town. The town was lovely with a great Christmas feel. I'm jealous as I haven't got anywhere booked yet this season!!! Have a great time.

Dan

Hi,
Been for new year 2010 & stayed in Kaprun.

nice small town with some good little bars
skiing good on the glacier but cold at that time of year also worth getting up early for the glacier as the ski bus & gondola gets very busy.
the local town runs are quite low at the bottom so you don't always get snow but are good higher up but the area is not huge.
Worth a trip to zell-em-see as well only 15 mins on the ski bus & a nice ski area.
also worth a trip to sallbach & go over to Leogang if you have time

It will be fun :-)
