I would like to book a ski holiday in France over the Christmas period and after reading several posts thought this was the best place for assistance. I will be travelling with my 21 year old son (boarder) and my 14 year old daughter (skier)all of intermediate ability. We normally ski Austria in January and stay in hotels. many of the Austrian villages are low and as a result do not have snow on the ground early season so we thought France could offer the Christmas post card snow covered streets etc.
We are looking for
. Catered chalet (hot tub etc)
. Ski in/out
. Night life close by for my son, but also for the three of us to go out and enjoy a little family Après ski.
From a price point the budget is limited so if any deals on lifts/equipment etc would be useful.

I know it is Christmas so might be asking too much but any advice that could narrow my search of resorts and accommodation would be gladly received.

Hi

We are also looking to do the same but have had previous experience skiing in france.

Tignes looks like a good option, the snow history is good for Christmas and it has a huge area great for intermediates. Even when the snow is a little thin in resort (having been in Easter) there is still plenty of skiing to be had. As for accommodation there are a huge number of chalets to choose from and therefore i am sure you would find something in your price range. Loads of the accommodation is ski to door with most being on the piste.

Val Thorens is also high, however they do require a fair amount of snow to get it open as there are a lot of rocks. But again great for intermediates and if the weather allows you can ski into the other valleys. There may not be quite as many chalets as Tignes but still plenty to choose from.

The other area we are looking at is Cervina Italy, which has the best snow record for Christmas of them all however I don't know much about the resort as have not been.

You can definitely find deals on lift passes/ski's etc sometimes buying bundles works out cheaper. We have used ski holiday extras for passes previously and found them cheapest but have not compared anything for this year. Sometimes ski hire works out cheaper if you go directly to Ski Set or the like. Or if you do a package with a tour company then they often have ski pass deals. If you research though you will ensure you get the cheapest price.

Hope this helps.

P.T. Many thanks for taking the time to reply. The information on Val Thorens is exactly what I was looking for, as it never mentions this in the brochures. I will have a look at Cervina. I have also been told that St Gervais may be a good option.

Once again thanks for your help and have a fantastic Christmas skiing.

If you looking for picture postcard resort Tignes can in some eyes be called ugly.skiing very good for intermediates although a nasty black can be the only way back depending where your staying or you not planned your route back well

Cervinia, will always have snow at this time of year. South facing open bowl which make early winter skiing a bit warmer than some resorts. If you're into piste skiing then plenty of wide open reds. Short transfer and pleasant town. Apres ski is decent for mixed group, there is a nice bar which has a live band (great for all your group) and one or 2 clubs for afterwards. Also one of few resorts in world where would recommend stopping every day for lunch on mountain i.e. no chips. Being Italy, great coffee and spoon standing hot chocolate available.

Many thanks for the input. I must say Cervinia does appear to tick many boxes.
