Hi,

My name is Pat, I am from Australia and am looking to go for a skiing holiday to Austria

My family of 7 are looking to come to Austria, in particular the area of Kitzbuhel, for a ski holiday at the end of December.

We are looking for available accommodation around this time but are realising that there is not much on offer in the heart of Kitzbuhel itself and are looking at booking in Fieberbrunn.

Can we get from this area to the main town of Kitzbuhel easily via public transport? e.g buses or trains?

We are looking at coming from 27/12/12 - 5/1/13, is this a peak time for the accommodation in the area?

Also how can we find more information on this?

Thanks!

Hi Pat,
When we went to Waidring earlier this year, I did an internet search and found the local tourist board (Pillerseetal I think) very helpful and they posted me a lot of leaflets, maps etc which arrived from Austria to UK in only a couple of days. We took the local bus to Fieberbrunn and found everything ran in true Austrian efficient style! I would think if you did the search for Kitzbuhel Tourist Board they would probably provide all the necessary information.

There is a direct train route from Fieberbrunn to Kitzbuhel. It operates about every half hour, and the one way ticket costs 3.6 Euros.

Excuse my rudeness, Pat, I was short of time. Welcome to J2ski. Just as I enjoyed skiing in Australia, I hope you enjoy skiing in Austria, especially Tirol.

I am curious as to why you have chosen Fieberbrunn? It isn't the most obvious choice! An interesting village, although, with good history. I have good connections there ~ the chief of Police organised the radar gun that resulted in my first Austrian speeding ticket! I think I was doing 37 in a 35 zone!

Also, the parish priest gave me a lot of help when I was researching the 1809 history of Wildschoenau ~ his grandfather had written the definitive book.

Back to your query, even if your accomodation is not close to the rail station, ski buses will provide the link up. In Austria, you get a ski bus pass as part of your accomodation.

Also, if you do have specific questions, please feel free to ask, either on the forum, or by PM.

Ski well.

Re the accomodation, have a look at: http://www.pillerseetal.at/en/winter/

Fill in your dates and family information, and let the tourist office do their work. They should email this out to all local accomodation, who would then contact you direct with their offer.

Hi Dave and everyone, thanks for the replies!

We have followed that link you recommended and came up with not a lot of options, most of the accommodation that was available was very expensive! I didn't think all the accommodation would be booked out this far in advance?

Is it a possibility that only the online allocation of each hotel/pension have sold out and that there is still availability be enquiring with the individual hotels/chalets/pensions?

We are basically staying in fieberbrunn because it had reasonably priced accommodation still available and it seemed close to Kitzbuhel.

Do the trains and buses run 24/7 and are there taxis available? I'm asking because if we want to party in Kitzbuhel at night we want to be able to get there and back, and cheaply if possible.

Not really sure of how the transport works around the towns and also any tips on where to go out for NYE? And do we need to pre-purchase tickets etc

Thanks for all your feedback I advance!!

Cheers,

Pat

Pat, if you want to have a good ski area, with access to Kitz, why not consider the Ski welt? It is one of the largest ski areas, but also has a ski route to Kitzbuhel.

Google the area, and look at Westendorf or Brixental.

Go on then, I have done it for you!

Check out the piste map first.

Hi Pat,

Another option is St Johann in Tirol. The 10 minute train ride from here to Kitzbuhel is free if you have ski equipment with you, and the Kitzbuhel Hahnenkamm station is right next to the Hahnenkamm gondola,so no messing with ski busses.

The SkiWelt is a fantastic ski area, but connection to Kitzbuhel by public transport is not as easy.
