Been there five times love the place nicely kept secret. Skiing is vast with links over a few valleys with good Bus service. Food on mountains is good and very reasonable compared to France and Switzerland. If there is alot of snow village us picture postcard. Chillies bar and dengle alm are nice lively bars. Sure u will enjoy it just don't tell to many people as it is a little gem.

hochkonig is being pushed now by the tour ops.
I looked at it a few years back, there was a fantastic chalet in Maria Alm which sadly is no longer available through the operator.
Looked to me like a reasonable ski area but not particularly well linked, so from one of to the other was a long trek and had to use buses. WTSS say its lovely but hard to get about, and suggest you have a car to appreciate it.
Looks beautiful though.

Hiya, we went to Maria alm in February 2011 and stayed in hotel neidereitter. The coffee shop which is attached had the loveliest baileys coffees and lovely cream cakes I've ever tasted. The hotel is right at the bottom of the slopes. Loved this resort, the ski show is a must to watch I've never seen as good. Well organised. If there is plenty snow you will be able to ski over the back of the slopes to the next area. When we were there on the first day the slope was open but the next day closed cos of the sun melting the slope. It catches the sun. Hopefully as you ski the area you won't come across the very long t bar, they had a sign up saying that a chair lift was getting built. Never been on as long in my life. Hope u have a great time, there is not loads of skiing area but what a lovely area to get warmed up before your second holiday

Thanks for your replies folks,Mmm Baileys coffee sounds real good.

According to the WTSS the chair has been built and looking at the snowcast it will be approx 1m snow with more forecast, hopefully the low temps will continue so we don't get the closed link problem.

If any of you had lessons whilst you visited is there an instructor/school you would recommend? I'm hoping to get a couple of lessons in, maybe off piste if conditions and my own (lack of) ability allow. )

Just gor back from Hintermoos last night (4K towards Hintertal from Maria Alm) It has been quite snowy over the last 2 weeks and all runs are 100% open including all links. The new gondola from Ski Zentrum at Hintermoos links brilliantly over to Dienten..you can ski over to Hintermoos from the Aberg which you can get to by SkiBus from Maria Alm.
Our favourite restaurant is the Wastlalm, small and quaint...a bit tricky to get to up a T bar from the Aberg lift, but the Thoraualm at the top of the Hintermoos 6 man chair (with heated seats!...the lift that is) serves top notch food at reasonable prices. Check out the Hochkonig website, the iski austria app and www.panomax.at webcam for most up to date information.
The runs over in Dienten are fab, wide and carvey but the pistes are better bashed on the Aberg/Hintermoos side/mountains.
We are back in 3 weeks.
I am still sulking that I am back in dreary old England, but cannot wait to go back in 3 weeks, just don't tell anyone about our little secret skiing idyll!

Oh...also the ski amade website...just google it all, it's all easy to find. If you have any trouble when you are there the visitor centre in Maria Alm is very good....near the main lift, next to the Raiffeisen Bank.
