OK, so my son is off to Norway skiing on 31 Jan, to Gala??
Has anyone been there? Is it particularly cold, compared to Alpine ski resorts? Anything I need to get him, or make him take so that he doesn't die?

Many thanks

My experience of Norwegian ski resorts is that they're small, flat, expensive and very cold! However my overall experience of skiing in Norway is that it has some of the best touring and off piste I've ever experienced. Skiing off piste and down to sea level- in some cases and actual piste is something to be experienced.

Just have him take plenty of layers and good quality gear and he'll be fine.

We skied over Christmas 2010 at Hemsedal (Norway). It was our 2nd visit, the first the previous year at Easter. Although we were expecting it to be cold it still caught us out. It was never warmer than about -8C at the base station and got to -23C one afternoon at mid station. Adding a bit of wind and exposure on chair lifts, and I'm sure the wind chill was circa -30C. With decent outers and inners we could keep our cores warm but feet and hands were tricky. I was just about ok but children/wife needed hand and feet warmers to stay sane.

As Grizwald says the resort was expensive. However Hemsedal is certainly not 'flat'. It was certainly quieter on the slopes/lifts than the Alps which is a big bonus...I hate queueing!
slippy slidey snow......me likey!
