Weekly Snow Report - Thursday 18 October

The week ahead

Following a little snow across The Alps early this week, temperatures have risen and a stable high pressure system looks likely to keep clear, sunny (and relatively mild) conditions in place through toward the end of this month. There are hints in the long-range forecasts of distinctly colder weather to follow but that's much too far out to be reliable yet.

Nonetheless, in advance of the real winter, over 20 ski areas are now operating worldwide.

This Week’s Headlines

- Up to 50cm new snow was reported at open ski areas in the Alps.

- Ruka expects to be the first non-glacier ski area in Europe to open, today, Thursday, 18th October.

- First Colorado ski area opens and Killington in Vermont expects to open this weekend.

- In Austria the Kaprun and Kitzsteinhorn Glaciers above Kaprun have both opened with fresh snow.

- Cervinia in Italy and Engelberg in Switzerland have also opened.
