Weekly Snow Report - Thursday 08 December

Snow Forecasts

The week ahead

Hello again,

Well, what a week that was?

Europe went from misery to delight as a succession of snowfalls crossed The Alps and turned green, dry slopes to powder fields. Major individual falls of 70cm have been reported from the Three Valleys to Scandinavia, with accumulations of over a metre across much of The Alps in the past 7 days. Snow is still falling in some parts.

Well over 50 European resorts will be open this coming weekend, with many more now confident of being fully open by the following weekend.

Across the Atlantic, ski areas in both Canada and the US were hit with yet more new snow. The Western regions of both countries currently have pretty epic conditions.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

Several days of relatively clear and settled weather are expected to bring superb skiing conditions to the open European resorts from now and into the weekend.

More snow is in the forecast after that, however, and the models are showing encouraging consistency in predicting a succession of further bands of snow over the next ten days or so.

Temperatures are generally down to, perhaps lower than, seasonal averages and seem likely to remain so.

Two words of caution - Avalanche Risk

Heavy snows falling onto bare, relatively warm, ground are going to take time to stabilise. Authorities in France and Switzerland have issued warnings in the past few days and the avalanche risk will be very high, on many slopes, for some time.

If you're in the mountains this week, please take extra care and seek local advice before leaving pisted runs.

Stay Safe :- Big Snow means Big Avalanche Risk - make sure you always know and understand the local avalanche risk level before you ski or snowboard off-piste, take appropriate safety equipment and never go off-piste alone.

The Snow Reports in this e-mail are for information only. Mountain Weather Systems are notoriously chaotic and any forecast beyond 48 hours is only an indication. Snow Forecasts, Snow Depths and current local Skiing Conditions change rapidly, and you should always obtain the latest, local, information before you ski.
