Weekly Snow Report - Friday 27 April

Snow Forecasts

The week ahead

Hello, and goodbye for now!

This will be our last weekly round-up for the 2011/2012 Northern Hemisphere ski season, and what a season it's been. The snow was a little late arriving, back in December, but eventually did so in some style with some of the biggest European snowfalls seen in recent years. Spring appeared to arrive early, in March, but April has seen a determined return of winter and it's barely stopped snowing all month in places.

Sixty or so ski areas remain in operation and will be open for the next week or two.

Some of Austria's glaciers are still boasting depths exceeding four metres and most of the remaining resorts have had snow this week. Most of France's resorts will shut after this weekend, with Chamonix, Tignes and Val Thorens open for another week. La Clusaz ends its season this weekend having had over a metre of fresh snow in the final week! In Italy only a handful of resorts, including Cervinia, remain open. In Switzerland nearly 20 ski areas remain open and fresh snow has taken the depth up to six metres in Engelberg.

As always at this time of year, you should check opening times and days directly with the resort before travelling.

Scotland has had a late-season top-up and Cairngorm plans to be open this weekend; Nevis Range and Glencoe may also open but check with their respective operators before travelling.

We hope you've been able to enjoy the snow this winter, and that you've found our reports useful. We'll be working hard over the summer to bring you more next winter...

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

Spring is coming... so how about some forward planning?

Fancy Tignes in January?

Some of our forum regulars are organising a group trip to Tignes in January 2013, and will be occupying a smart chalet in Tignes les Brévières from the 13th. Skiers of all abilities are welcome, so if you like meeting new people or are short of ski buddies for next season... this could be for you. Full details can be found in our forum on the thread J2Ski group holiday to Tignes, which has just been updated with pictures of the current conditions!

Have a fantastic summer, until the snows come again...

Stay Safe :- Big Snow means Big Avalanche Risk - make sure you always know and understand the local avalanche risk level before you ski or snowboard off-piste, take appropriate safety equipment and never go off-piste alone.

The Snow Reports in this e-mail are for information only. Mountain Weather Systems are notoriously chaotic and any forecast beyond 48 hours is only an indication. Snow Forecasts, Snow Depths and current local Skiing Conditions change rapidly, and you should always obtain the latest, local, information before you ski.
