Weekly Snow Report - Thursday 12 January

Snow Forecasts

The week ahead

Hello,

Last weekend saw some huge snowfall, particularly in Austria - where we hear tales of snow gauges at St.Anton and elsewhere becoming unreliable due to being completely submerged by snow! Major snows, in some cases accompanied by hurricane force winds, fell across the French and Swiss Alps also.

St.Anton, incidentally, now leads the worldwide snow charts with over 5 metres of snow at altitude! Austria, France and Switzerland each now boast more than a dozen resorts with upper snow depths exceeding 3 metres (ten feet) and parts of Switzerland have recorded over 4 metres of new snow in the past 30 days alone...

It has caused problems, however, with various high Alpine resorts (including Zermatt and Ischgl) being cut off at times as access roads have had to be closed due to avalanche danger. Clearer weather over the past 48 hours is allowing helicopters to survey and blast danger areas, so hopefully the worst of the disruption is over for now.

Milder temperatures over the past few days have been accompanied by the re-emergence of the sun; some of our sources have been late reporting this week as they've been too busy skiing...

In North America, some impressive snows were reported from Alaska and lesser but useful fresh snow for a number of ski areas on both coasts. A forecast (and much hoped-for) change in large-scale weather patterns looks as if it may soon bring the dry spell in many areas to an end.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

The mild weather currently in The Alps is about to give way to much colder conditions. Tomorrow (Friday) will probably be the last of the mild days before temperatures drop by between 10C and 15C across much of the area. Some scattered light snow showers are possible at times over the weekend and around the middle of next week, although they will be more localised than of late and prevailing conditions are likely to be cold and clear for most of the Alpine region.

The various forecast models are indicating a distinct change in weather patterns in around a weeks time; staying cold but with a possible shift in precipitation away from the Northern Alps that have had it so good so far... a little way out to be sure yet, but worth watching.

As always, take great care if going off-piste as the avalanche risk remains Considerable in many locations.

J2Ski supports youth charity Snow-Camp

Snow-Camp uses a unique combination of skiing, snowboarding and life-skills programmes to support inner-city young people. Through the combination of snowsports and life-skills, their programmes enable young people to grow in confidence and self esteem, develop as individuals and make positive choices for their lives. Snow-Camp now works with at least 400 young people each year across 12 London Boroughs.

If you would like to find out more check out www.snow-camp.org.uk, and see how you can support them too.

Have fun and stay safe,

Stay Safe :- Big Snow means Big Avalanche Risk - make sure you always know and understand the local avalanche risk level before you ski or snowboard off-piste, take appropriate safety equipment and never go off-piste alone.

The Snow Reports in this e-mail are for information only. Mountain Weather Systems are notoriously chaotic and any forecast beyond 48 hours is only an indication. Snow Forecasts, Snow Depths and current local Skiing Conditions change rapidly, and you should always obtain the latest, local, information before you ski.
