Weekly Snow Report - Thursday 05 January

Snow Forecasts

The week ahead

Hello - and welcome to our 2012 snow mails,

The year has started in spectacular style in Europe with many ski areas across Austria, France and Switzerland reporting more than a metre of new snow this past week. A large number of resorts are now reporting bases (on upper slopes) of 2 metres or more. The good news has extended across The Alps and Pyrenees with lesser, though still substantial, falls of snow.

Scandinavia has also seen major snowfall and Scotland's ski areas have re-opened with fresh snow.

Some fresh snow has eased conditions in the Eastern United States, although many areas in the West are still waiting. Canadian resorts in British Columbia report good conditions.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

Once again we can report a major snow storm for The Alps. This is in progress right now and it has been snowing across much of the region for most of today (Thursday). Large accumulations, well in excess of 50cm in many locations, are again expected to cause disruption to travel over the next 24 hours or so.

The worst (or best!) of the storm is forecast to clear through the Western Alps tomorrow, and from the Eastern Alps over the weekend. The heaviest snow is - once again - expected to the North of the region. Several days of clear and settled weather will follow and should mean some spectacular skiing conditions through the weekend and into next week.

As always with heavy snow - caution will be needed. High winds have accompanied much of the season's snow to date and the Avalanche Risk will be very high in many areas for a few days. Take local advice before leaving the pistes, do not ski alone and ensure you have all the usual safety kit (transceiver, probe and shovel).

J2Ski talks to Chemmy Alcott

She's certainly not sitting around while she recovers from last season's injury, but she took a little time out to tell us about her plans. You can read our interview with Chemmy here.

Have fun and stay safe,

Stay Safe :- Big Snow means Big Avalanche Risk - make sure you always know and understand the local avalanche risk level before you ski or snowboard off-piste, take appropriate safety equipment and never go off-piste alone.

The Snow Reports in this e-mail are for information only. Mountain Weather Systems are notoriously chaotic and any forecast beyond 48 hours is only an indication. Snow Forecasts, Snow Depths and current local Skiing Conditions change rapidly, and you should always obtain the latest, local, information before you ski.
