Weekly Snow Report - Thursday 01 March

Snow Forecasts

The week ahead

Hello,

A complete contrast in conditions either side of The Atlantic this past week; North America has seen massive and widespread snow whilst the European Alps have been gripped by a false-Spring with unusually high temperatures and plenty of sunshine.

Snow has fallen right across North America, with many resorts reporting more than a metre of fresh snow over the past 7 days. British Columbia and the Western US have seen particularly heavy snow.

Austrian resorts reported some reasonable snow at the end of last week, although warmer weather has prevailed since then.

Despite the temperatures, however, the impressive snow-pack across The Alps is holding up well and the majority of resorts are reporting good - albeit Spring-like - skiing.

Avalanches

Please pay particular attention to the Avalanche Risk for the rest of this season! There have been numerous reports of large slides in the past few days, due to a combination of deep snow-packs, warm weather in The Alps and the poor bonding of the initial snows (when heavy snow fell on relatively warm ground). If you ski off piste, please keep an eye on the Avalanche Safety section of our forum for the latest news... and always seek and follow local advice in-resort.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

After a few more sunny, warm days this weekend the temperature looks set to fall markedly across The Alps. Temperatures are likely to fall around 15C by Monday to levels below the seasonal average for the rest of next week.

There is a good possibility of snow accompanying the colder weather in many areas. Although consistently predicting a cool-down, the forecast precipitation has been all over the place for the past 36 hours!

Keep an eye on the forecasts for next week, but take anything further out than 2 days with a big pinch of salt for now.

Competitions - Win Stuff in March

It's the 1st of March and this season is far from over... so we're giving away a bunch of stuff in a series of competitions.

Follow this link for our March Competitions.

The first competition is now running, so if you have any great photographs you'd like to share then you can enter them in our Picture of the Day. Login and vote for your favourite, even if you don't wish to enter.

Avalanche Safety

A final word of warning... avalanches have claimed a number of lives in the past few days and anyone considering skiing out-of-bounds or off-piste should continue to exercise caution. Always take local advice before leaving marked runs, never ski alone, and ensure you and your ski buddies always carry transceivers, shovels and probes when off-piste (and know how to use them).

Stay safe and bon ski,
The J2Ski Team

Stay Safe :- Big Snow means Big Avalanche Risk - make sure you always know and understand the local avalanche risk level before you ski or snowboard off-piste, take appropriate safety equipment and never go off-piste alone.

The Snow Reports in this e-mail are for information only. Mountain Weather Systems are notoriously chaotic and any forecast beyond 48 hours is only an indication. Snow Forecasts, Snow Depths and current local Skiing Conditions change rapidly, and you should always obtain the latest, local, information before you ski.
