Weekly Snow Report - Thursday 19 December
The week ahead
As we roll on toward the end of the year, it looks like Europe is coming to the end of a relatively snow-free few weeks. With snow expected in the North and West of The Alps today, with some significant localized falls, the outlook is rather different from a week ago.
Furthermore, although stretching the usual limits of reliable forecasting, the models are converging to point at a very unsettled (snowy) end to December.
Certain reindeer-powered delivery services are advised to make contingency plans (extra Elves), as somewhat stormy conditions are looking possible for a few days from the 24th.
* Heavy snow back in New England.
* Healthy snowfall expected in the Alps this weekend.
* First snow in Cairo for 110 years!
* Gales in Scotland again, but snow too.
It’s been a third week of largely snowless, often sunny skies across much of the Alps. Change is in the air this weekend which is good news as fresh snow is definitely needed, there’s no real off piste terrain to be found now and the groomed pistes could do with new snow. For piste skiers the picture is far from bleak as snow from November, along with snowmaking, is keeping pistes skiable and most areas have quite a lot open already, with more planned for the coming Christmas week.
Across the Atlantic the biggest snow storms of the past seven days were, unusually for North America, reported on the East Coast with resorts in New England reporting up to 40cm of snow in 24 hours and 60cm (two feet) in 48 hours.
The snow that’s missing in the Alps seems to be falling abundantly in the Middle East where great conditions (once the roads were cleared) were reported on Lebanon’s slopes. Closer to home it’s looking more wintery in Scotland again, although 100mph winds may hamper operations.
There is much more detail of the snow in The Alps, Scandinavia and North America in the full version of our J2Ski Weekly Snow Report - 19th December 2013 online.
Our friends at SkiSet have given us an extra discount, on prices that already save you up to 40% on the walk-in price, in the run-up to Xmas.
Until next week,

Stay Safe :- Big Snow means Big Avalanche Risk - make sure you always know and understand the local avalanche risk level before you ski or snowboard off-piste, take appropriate safety equipment and never go off-piste alone.
The Snow Reports in this e-mail are for information only. Mountain Weather Systems are notoriously chaotic and any forecast beyond 48 hours is only an indication. Snow Forecasts, Snow Depths and current local Skiing Conditions change rapidly, and you should always obtain the latest, local, information before you ski.
