Ski Fox Peak - Ski Resort and Snow Summary

Skiing in Fox Peak

Fox Peak, New Zealand (1170m to 1850m)

One of the most significant of New Zealand's rich tradition of 'club' skiing, that is ski fields operated on a voluntary basius by groups of individuals formed in to a non-profit making club. Until 1990 the Fox Peak Ski Club was called the Tasman Ski Club, having originated on the Tasman Glacier at Mt. Cook in the late 1920s, making it one of New Zealand's oldest clubs. The first base lodge was built on the present Fox Lodge (bottom Hut) site in 1933 and has been greatly improved and expanded over the years so that its now more than twice its original dimensions. The current lift system provides one of new Zealand's biggest verticals at 680 metres (2230ft). Ski touring and parascending are popular and heliskiing can normally be arranged subject to demand and advance notice. Learners tow operates free of charge. Night skiing is available free of charge to people on the mountain when there is a full moon, usually between 8 and 10pm. The centre offers a true mountain experience with uncrowded, extensive and tranquil slopes. There are additional ample ski touring areas with great views of New Zealand's highest peaks in the Southern Alps. Sleeping bags required for accommodation in the Lodge,
