Skiing in Yabuli
Yabuli, China (500m to 1384m)
The original of several ski areas in the region, Yabuli which originally had the best winter sports facilities in China including a new six person gondola built by Doppelmayr for the 1996 Asian winter games which were staged in the region, with Alpine events at Yabuli. Two Norwegian built double chairs, one with a bubble cover, were added in 1997and most recently a corporation called Melco brought heated gondolas with leather seats, mini-bars and BOSE sound systems to Yabuli along with luxury hotels. However ski lifts are reportedly operated by three separate companies with no interchangable ticket. The ski area lies 1200km (750 miles) north of Beijing. One of the slopes, Da Qing, is owned by local farmers. Lodging in A frame cabins, après ski includes bonfires, rice wine and locals dressed up as Santa Claus variants.
