Berthoud Pass, USA
One of the world's highest ski areas, arguably at one point the highest 'proper' ski hilland indeed in the world top three until the late 1990s when new lift building in Asia and elsewhere in Colorado knocked it down the rankings.
Puchased in 1999 by Silver Creek holdings after many years of irregular operation the company opted to remove the lifts and make it a snowcat operation soon after 2000 when pricing pressure from large neighbours made competing as a lift served hill tenuous. It is now used mostly by those prwepared to hike up to the ungroomed, uunpatrolled trails. Only good skiers, fully knowledgable about avalanche danger and survival, ideally with a local guide are advised to ski or board here. The centre is close to Winter Park and one of the closest to Denver.
